There are many factors that cause snoring in humans and just as many snoring remedies. There are also several signs that indicate there might be a more serious problem causing the snoring. Some of the most common signs among snoring patients are reported to be restless sleep, tiredness, fatigue, and low energy levels. On the other hand factors such as age, sleep posture, smoking, alcohol, and obesity, could be also the reason behind your snoring problem.
Were you aware that there are different types of snoring that originate from various parts of the mouth?
Mouth-Based Snoring
This type of oral snoring occurs when you end up breathing through your mouth while sleeping, instead of through your nose.
It occurs when tissue in your mouth causes a blockage between your throat and the oral cavity. This narrows down the space between this transition area and causes the respective tissue to vibrate.
Mouth-based snoring may also occur as a result of reduced tension between the uvula and palatal arch in the mouth. This causes the flow of air to cause vibration in the surrounding tissue when it passes through your respiratory tract.
Two of the most common signs to identify mouth-based snoring are dry mouth in the morning and breathing through the mouth at night.
Tongue-Based Snoring
This snoring occurs when your tongue blocks the airways by falling against the back of the throat. What really happens is; the tongue’s muscles obstruct the pharyngeal cavity of the mouth. This results in the characteristic snoring noise that often stems from the throat.
However, there may be a multitude of other factors that cause your tongue to get in the way of a good night’s sleep.
For instance, people with large tongues may experience a partial blockage that restricts the flow of air through the nose or mouth. Another reason can be weak tongue muscles. The weakness often causes the tongue muscles to relax which makes the tongue fall back against the airways of the mouth. This compromises the body’s ability to prevent airway obstruction.
Snoring Remedies
There are several home and even medical snoring remedies for both tongue-based snoring and mouth-based snoring.
For tongue snoring, one of the best solutions is to use a device called mandibular advancement splint, which helps prevent the tongue muscle from falling back into the throat.
For mouth snoring, one of the most effective snoring remedies involves using an oral appliance mouthpiece which helps block mouth breathing and allows you to breathe through your nose.
